Routes
Choose your route carefully. The distance and elevation should give you some indication as to how easy/hard each route is. Please view the GPX files and for further route details below in the Routes section.
Swim
The swim course is 1 lap. Please see the plan to see the exit route at the end of the lap. Four waves are scheduled: faster swimmers in wave 1, followed by progressively slower swimmers in wave 2, 3 and 4. These waves will start roughly 5 minutes apart. Please acclimatise at the top end of the lake near the boat landings and not in front of the start line.
There will be full water safety cover. If you are in any difficulty, stay calm, put your head back and arms out wide to your sides, you wont sink in a wetsuit, wave one arm towards the nearest kayak and they will attend to you.
Wetsuits are compulsory if the water temperature is under 14C, optional if between 14C-22C and banned if over 22C (don’t worry too much about the last possibility)
Bike - 59km
The cycle route is 1 lap of 59k. All the roads are open to other traffic. The climb from Ambleside is notionally closed, but residents and others have access so assume there will be traffic. It is your responsibility to negotiate the course safely within all the usual rules of the road. Marshals are there to indicate the route only, they cannot stop traffic.
Regrettably we have had a number of crashes in recent years particularly on the descent of the Kirkstone Pass, they have all been rider error. Ride within your limits.
We also recommend attaching a working rear light to your bike. It is often poor visibility on the Kirkstone Pass.

Transition
Kit List
- Wet weather jacket (something you could feel comfortable in at potentially near zero temps, in wind and rain)
- Paper map of the course & compass (available to purchase on the day if required)
- Whistle
- Sufficient nutrition
Run Route - 15km
Mainly off-road on fell trails. Fell running shoes recommended. Don’t be tempted to save time in transition by not putting socks on. The final 200m to the top are a hands-on scramble.
You must take your run bag with specified kit, food and drink.
